Project overview

Sofab began with a question:

Have we lost something in moving from the carpenter's workshop to the click of a button?

Traditional custom furniture carried more than craftsmanship. The maker was visible, materials could be understood first-hand, decisions happened through conversation, and the finished piece often carried a stronger sense of trust and personal attachment.

Online furniture buying solved a different problem. It made browsing, comparison, and purchase dramatically more convenient, but much of that involvement disappeared.

Sofab was created to explore whether those two worlds could meet.

The shift

Convenience changed how we buy furniture. It also changed what we get to see.

The project started by comparing two very different furniture-buying experiences.

The traditional way

Buying from a carpenter involved conversation, material knowledge, customisation and a visible sense of how a product was made.

The convenient way

Online buying made furniture easier to browse and compare, but much of the making process became distant and opaque.

Traditional furniture-making experience.
Contemporary furniture-buying experience.

But the customer often had much less visibility into how the furniture was made, what sat beneath the upholstery, or why one product should feel more trustworthy than another.

The opportunity

Sofab was not about choosing one model over the other. It was about asking: can modern convenience keep the transparency, involvement, and human connection of traditional furniture making?

The strategic opportunity

Reconnect convenience with involvement.

The opportunity was not to recreate the traditional carpenter model exactly.
It was to recover some of what made that experience valuable:

  • Visibility
  • Choice
  • Participation
  • Confidence
  • Connection

While retaining the convenience expected from contemporary furniture retail.
This became the strategic space for Sofab: a brand that could make furniture buying feel more considered and participatory without losing simplicity.

Brand philosophy

Three ideas shaped the brand.

Transparency

The brand needed to make quality feel easier to understand rather than asking customers to rely only on claims. Confidence begins with clarity.

Choice

Meaningful choice gives customers a stronger role in shaping their sofa. The product should feel selected with intention, not simply picked from inventory.

Participation

Sofab treats the purchase journey as part of the brand, not just the transaction. How the customer participates matters as much as what they finally choose.

Brand identity

An identity for a more participatory furniture brand.

The identity gives a name and visual presence to Crafting sofas with you. Rather than separating the brand from the customer experience, the identity holds together a contemporary furniture proposition built around transparency, customisation, and participation.
